The fallacies of Bertrand Russell's arguments |
|
|
As stated in Bertrand Russell's 1927 essay entitled "Why I
Am Not A Christian" |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
What Is a Christian? |
|
Russell says the a Christian is one who "believes in God and immortality"
and who has "at the very lowest the belief that Christ was, if not divine,
at least the best and wisest of men". |
|
|
|
|
At best Russell's statements reflect his complete inability to understand
the fundamental characteristics of what makes someone a Christian. So
here are the most important characteristics of someone who is a true
Christian. |
|
|
A true Christian believes that all Scripture, the Old and New
Testaments, as originally written, was given to men by the inspiration of
God and was spoken and written down as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. |
|
|
|
1 Corinthians 2:13
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom
teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with
spiritual. (KJV)
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good
works. (KJV)
2 Peter 1:20-21
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any
private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of
man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (KJV) |
|
|
A true Christian believes in one God, eternally existing in
three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. |
|
|
|
Psalms 90:2
Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed
the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
(KJV)
Romans 1:20
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are
clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal
power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse. (KJV)
Romans 1:7
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace
to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)
Galatians 1:1-4
Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus
Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) And all the
brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia: Grace be to you
and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave
himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world,
according to the will of God and our Father. (KJV)
John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made
by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was
life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness;
and the darkness comprehended it not. (KJV)
Matthew 16:15-16
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter
answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. (KJV)
John 20:26-29
And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas
with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst,
and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy
finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into
my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said
unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou
hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and
yet have believed. (KJV)
Acts 5:3-4
But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie
to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it
remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine
own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not
lied unto men, but unto God. (KJV)
1 John 5:7
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the
Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. (KJV) |
|
|
A true Christian believes that Jesus Christ is the only
begotten Son of God, begotten of the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin, and
is fully God and fully man. |
|
|
|
John 3:16-18 For God so
loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent
not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through
him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that
believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name
of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV)
1 John 4:9 In this was
manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only
begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. (KJV)
Luke 1:35 And the angel
answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the
power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing
which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. (KJV)
Luke 2:7 And she brought
forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him
in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (KJV)
Luke 2:11 For unto you
is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
(KJV)
1 Timothy 2:5 For there
is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
(KJV)
Matthew 1:23 Behold, a
virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call
his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. (KJV)
John 1:14 And the Word
was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as
of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (KJV)
1 Corinthians 15:45-47
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last
Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is
spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from
heaven. (KJV)
Philippians 2:6-8 Who,
being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But
made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and
was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he
humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the
cross. (KJV) |
|
|
A true Christian believes that man was created in the image
of God; that he sinned, and, thereby incurred not only physical death, but
also spiritual death which is separation from God; and, that human beings
are born with a sinful nature. |
|
|
|
Genesis 1:26 And God
said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have
dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over
the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that
creepeth upon the earth. (KJV)
Genesis 3:1-7 Now the
serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had
made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of
every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of
the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is
in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither
shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye
shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then
your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was
pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of
the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and
he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they
were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
(KJV)
Romans 5:12 Wherefore,
as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death
passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. (KJV)
Romans 3:22-23 Even the
righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all
them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come
short of the glory of God. (KJV)
Ephesians 2:12 That at
that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of
Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and
without God in the world. (KJV) |
|
|
A true Christian believes that the Lord Jesus Christ died for
our sins according to the Scriptures as a representative and substitutionary
sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified on the basis of His
shed blood. |
|
|
|
Romans 3:24-25 Being
justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ
Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his
blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past,
through the forbearance of God. (KJV)
Matthew 26:28 For this
is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission
of sins. (KJV)
Galatians 1:3-5 Grace be
to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who
gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil
world, according to the will of God and our Father: To whom be glory for
ever and ever. Amen. (KJV)
1 Peter 1:18-19
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as
silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your
fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish
and without spot. (KJV)
1 Peter 2:21-25 For even
hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an
example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile
found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he
suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth
righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,
that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose
stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now
returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. (KJV) |
|
|
A true Christian believes in the resurrection of the
crucified body of our Lord, in His ascension into heaven, and His present
life for us as High Priest and Advocate. |
|
|
|
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For
I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that
Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was
buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.
(KJV)
Acts 1:9-11 And when he
had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud
received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward
heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which
also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same
Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner
as ye have seen him go into heaven. (KJV)
1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be
the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant
mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus
Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and
that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power
of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
(KJV)
Hebrews 9:24 For Christ
is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures
of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God
for us. (KJV)
Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore
he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him,
seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. (KJV)
Romans 8:34 Who is he
that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again,
who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
(KJV)
1 John 2:1-2 My little
children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man
sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he
is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the
sins of the whole world. (KJV) |
|

that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our
Saviour Jesus Christ. (KJV)
Acts 1:9-11 And when he had
spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud
received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward
heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which

Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner
as ye have seen him go into heaven. (KJV)
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are
asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we
believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in
Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the
Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall
not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from
heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of
God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and
remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord
in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one
another with these words. (KJV)

and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second
death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and
shall reign with him a thousand years. (KJV)
John 14:1-4 Let not your
heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's
house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to
prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will
come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be
also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. (KJV)
Matthew 24:29-30
Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened,
and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven,
and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the
sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth
mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with
power and great glory. (KJV)
Mark 13:26 And then
shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and
glory. (KJV)
Luke 21:27 And then
shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
(KJV) |

A true Christian believes that all who receive by faith the
Lord Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit, and thereby become children
of God, a relationship in which they are eternally secure. |

Ephesians 2:8-10 For by
grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift
of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that
we should walk in them. (KJV)
Titus 2:11-14 For the
grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us
that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed
hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus
Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity,
and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (KJV)
1 Peter 1:5 Who are kept
by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the
last time. (KJV)
Romans 10:9-10 That if
thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine
heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with
the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is
made unto salvation. (KJV) |
|

A true Christian believes in the bodily resurrection of the
just and of the unjust; the everlasting blessedness of the saved and the
everlasting conscious punishment of the lost. |

Daniel 12:2 And many of
them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting
life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. (KJV)
Matthew 5:28-29 But I
say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath
committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye
offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for
thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body
should be cast into hell. (KJV)
Acts 24:15 And have hope
toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a
resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. (KJV)
Mark 9:43-48 And if thy
hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life
maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never
shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt
into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that
never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not
quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee
to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be
cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not
quenched. (KJV)
Revelation 20:15 And
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake
of fire. (KJV)
Revelation 22:3-5 And
there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be
in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and
his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and
they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them
light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. (KJV)
Revelation 22:11 He that
is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be
filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he
that is holy, let him be holy still. (KJV) |

How to become a Christian? |

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and

The First-cause Argument |
|
|
The argument:
It is maintained that everything we see in this world has a cause, and as
you go back in the chain of causes further and further you must come to a
First Cause, and to that First Cause you give the name of God.
Russell's response to this argument: If
everything must have a cause, then God must have a cause. If there can be
anything without a cause, it may just as well be the world as God, so that
there cannot be any validity in that argument.
However, Russell's logic is incorrect. He assumes that
the Creator is the same as that which is created; that is since that which
is created has a Creator, therefore the Creator (God) must also have a
Creator. But this is not true; we are made in God's image, we were not
made equal in any way to God. In addition to being erroneous logic, it
also contradicts God's own words. |
|
|
|
John 1:1-3 In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The
same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without
him was not any thing made that was made. |
|
|
|
Genesis 1:1-2:3 In the
beginning God created the Heaven and the earth. And the earth was without
form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit
of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light:
and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God
divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the
darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first
day.
And God said, Let there be a
firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the
waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under
the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were
the second day.
And God said, Let the waters
under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land
appear: and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering
together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. And God
said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit
tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth:
and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed
after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after
his kind: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were
the third day.
And God said, Let there be lights
in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let
them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be
for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and
it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day,
and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set
them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to
rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the
darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were
the fourth day.
And God said, Let the waters
bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may
fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great
whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought
forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind:
and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and
multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the
earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
And God said, Let the earth bring
forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and
beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of
the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that
creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And
God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them
have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and
over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that
creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image
of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed
them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the
earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over
the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is
upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of
a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the
earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon
the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat:
and it was so. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was
very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Thus the heavens and the earth
were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended
his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his
work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it:
because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and
made. |

The Natural-law Argument |
|
|
The argument:
People observed the planets going around the sun according to the law of
gravitation, and they thought that God had given a behest to these planets
to move in that particular fashion, and that was why they did so.
Russell's response to this argument: The whole
idea that natural laws imply a lawgiver is due to a confusion between
natural and human laws. Human laws are behests commanding you to behave a
certain way, in which you may choose to behave, or you may choose not to
behave; but natural laws are a description of how things do in fact behave,
and being a mere description of what they in fact do, you cannot argue that
there must be somebody who told them to do that, because even supposing that
there were, you are then faced with the question "Why did God issue just
those natural laws and no others?" If you say that he did it simply from his
own good pleasure, and without any reason, you then find that there is
something which is not subject to law, and so your train of natural law is
interrupted. If you say, as more orthodox theologians do, that in all the
laws which God issues he had a reason for giving those laws rather than
others -- the reason, of course, being to create the best universe, although
you would never think it to look at it -- if there were a reason for the
laws which God gave, then God himself was subject to law, and therefore you
do not get any advantage by introducing God as an intermediary. You really
have a law outside and anterior to the divine edicts, and God does not serve
your purpose, because he is not the ultimate lawgiver.
Again Russell's logic is incorrect. Russell assumes that natural laws
cannot have a lawgiver because they describe how things behave. But,
in fact, both can be true; natural laws can have a lawgiver and they can
describe how things behave. Just because we do not understand how God
upholds the natural laws, or why he made these laws and no others, doesn't
mean that He doesn't.
In addition,
Russell assumes incorrectly that all things must be subject to natural laws,
including God's good pleasure. But he misses the fact that God is God,
and He can do whatever He wants in any way He wants. The creation is
not the same as the Creator. We cannot use the same metrics to
describe both. In fact, except what God says about Himself in the
Bible, we do not know God's motives or reasons for making things the way He
did. God Himself says that He made
all things that were made, and that He upholds all things, and that His ways
are nor the same as our ways, and that He can make things the way He wants. |

John 1:1-3 In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The
same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without
him was not any thing made that was made. |

Hebrews 1:1-4 God, who
at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by
the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he
hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who
being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and
upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged
our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so
much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more
excellent name than they. |

The Argument from Design |
|
|
The argument:
Everything in the world is made just so that we can manage to live in the
world, and if the world was ever so little different, we could not manage to
live in it.
Russell's response to this argument: Since the
time of Darwin we understand much better why living creatures are adapted to
their environment. It is not that their environment was made to be suitable
to them but that they grew to be suitable to it, and that is the basis of
adaptation. There is no evidence of design about it. ... It is a
most astonishing thing that people can believe that this world, with all the
things that are in it, with all its defects, should be the best that
omnipotence and omniscience have been able to produce in millions of years.
Again Russell's logic is incorrect and myopic. Russell
believed that humans evolved and adapted to our environments. He is
not unlike many people today who dance to the drumbeat of the secular
humanist religion, believing that humans evolved from animals over millions
of years and adapted to our environment, where only the fittest survived.
But God tells us specifically that He created the Heaven and
earth in six days, and that He rested on the seventh day, and that He
created the sun, moon, and stars for signs, for seasons, and to give light
upon the earth, and that He created man to have dominion over the earth and
all that is therein, and that He makes Himself know to everyone on earth. |

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it:
because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and
made. |

Romans 1:18-20 For the
wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that
which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto
them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are
clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal
power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: |

The Moral Arguments for Deity |
|
|
The argument:
One form is to say there would be no right or wrong unless God existed.
Russell's response to this argument: If you are
quite sure there is a difference between right and wrong, then you are in
this situation: Is that difference due to God's fiat or is it not? If it is
due to God's fiat, then for God himself there is no difference between right
and wrong, and it is no longer a significant statement to say that God is
good. If you are going to say, as theologians do, that God is good, you must
then say that right and wrong have some meaning which is independent of
God's fiat, because God's fiats are good and not bad independently of the
mere fact that he made them. If you are going to say that, you will then
have to say that it is not only through God that right and wrong came into
being, but that they are in their essence logically anterior to God.
Herein lies
the erroneous logic: Russell says if we assume that God is good, then
He cannot create things that are not good. Yet all we have to do is
look around and we can see the things in this world that are not good.
And, since there are things in this world that are not good, then a good God
could not have made them. Therefore God cannot exist.
However, we know from the Bible that God made everything that
was made, and that God is holy, and righteous, and just, and that God even
made bad people. |

Romans 3:21-26 But now
the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by
the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of
Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no
difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being
justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ
Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his
blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past,
through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his
righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which
believeth in Jesus. |

The Arguments for the Remedying of Injustice |
|
|
The argument:
The existence of God is required in order to bring justice into the world.
So there must be a God, and there must be Heaven and Hell in order that in
the long run there may be justice.
Russell's response to this argument: A
scientific person would argue "Here we find in this world a great deal of
injustice, and so far as that goes that is a reason for supposing that
justice does not rule in the world; and therefore so far as it goes it
affords a moral argument against deity and not in favor of one."
Sin entered into the world by the sin of Adam, and through
sin wickedness and evil reign, causing what appears to be a great deal of
injustice in the world. But this is not an argument for no God!
On the contrary, it is an argument for a loving God, who gave His only
begotten Son to live a sinless life, to die on the cross in our place, to be
resurrected from the dead on the third day, to ascend into Heaven to sit at
the right hand of God, and to give life to those who believe in Him and to
give damnation to those who have done evil. |

Romans 5:12-19
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and
so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law
sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not
sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of
him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For
if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and
the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto
many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment
was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto
justification. For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more
they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall
reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one
judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of
one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by
one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one
shall many be made righteous. |

1 Corinthians 15:22 For
as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. |

|
John 3:16-21 For God so
loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent
not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through
him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that
believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name
of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is
come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their
deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither
cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth
truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they
are wrought in God. |

had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud

also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same

Hebrews 12:1-2 Wherefore
seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let

the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before
him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right
hand of the throne of God. |

John 5:25-29 Verily,
verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall
hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the
Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in
himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he
is the Son of man. Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which
all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they
that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done
evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. |
